Bas Relief Sculpture Workshops

September 25–27 and October 2–4, 2026

A three-day immersion in the oldest and most versatile form of sculpture

bas-relief-workshop

$450 per session

All Materials Included

Hours: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. daily, with a break for lunch · 18 hours of instruction

Bas relief is as accessible as it is versatile — an ideal introduction to both classical sculpture and classical drawing. It builds an understanding of form, proportion, and light while keeping the artist grounded in a shallow, manageable space. Because the image reads from a single viewpoint, it draws on the same careful observation of contour, composition, value, and shadow that underpins classical drawing.

Students work from their own photographs to create a bas relief roughly 16 x 16 inches in water-based clay — a person, an animal, a building, a landscape, flowers, or something entirely imagined. The form has no limits, and the range of subjects in the room makes for a lively class. Instruction is given through demonstration and individual attention in a relaxed and uplifting atmosphere. All levels are welcome — even those who have never touched clay.

Weekend I · September 25–27, 2026

Weekend II · October 2–4, 2026

Register for either weekend, or both. The two workshops run on consecutive weekends. Students taking both may continue the first sculpture or begin a new one.

A short list of tools will be shared upon registration.
